My mom is a super duper crafting extraordinaire and is always coming up with amazing ideas for items to make for craft shows, typically for useful household items and especially for the kitchen (one of my favorite places!). One of the newer designs is this microwave steam bag, which has quickly become my new best friend in the kitchen!
They sell these on Etsy too, starting as low as $6 (plus shipping) so anyone can get one! You can steam a wide variety of vegetables using these. So far I’ve done carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, acorn squash and potatoes. All of them take 5 minutes or less. It’s perfect for when you’re hungry but don’t have anything on hand (except potato chips or some other kind of junk food) and don’t want to spend a lot of time throwing something together. All you have to do is rinse whatever veggie(s) you’re cooking, stick them in the bag with a damp paper towel on top, cook for 5 minutes, done! I take mine to work with me every day with a small potato in case I need something in the afternoon. A plain baked potato (weighing no more than 122g prior to cooking) is an excellent snack choice for IBS and GERD/Acid Reflux/Heartburn sufferers; it is on the low FODMAP food plan for IBS Sufferers, and works well for the heartburn sufferers because potatoes are alkaline, meaning they help to neutralize the acid in the stomach that contributes to acid reflux and heartburn. And surprisingly, the potatoes come out fluffy inside with a nice crisp skin that will have you convinced it was done in the oven rather than the microwave.
I can’t say enough about how great the bag is and highly recommend everyone gets one! Search etsy either by “microwave potato bag” or “microwave steam bag” and you should find them. Anyone locally (in Rochester NY) could get one from my mom for $7.50. She makes them in all sorts of different fabrics. Seriously, go get one! You’ll be so happy you did.
